How To Perform Ford Engine Oil Change
Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle, and is responsible for internal lubrication which allows the engine to efficiently operate. However, engines require a specific oil level to function properly, and it should be inspected each time the tank is filled up. To perform a Ford oil change, follow the steps below.
Preliminary Steps
Get a funnel made from plastic or metal; along with the proper oil grade (refer to the manual to learn which one is best). You’ll also want a clean oil rag. Next, park your vehicle on ground which is level, because if you don’t its oil level could be inaccurate when checked.
Deactivate the engine and then wait ten minutes until all the oil drains into your oil pan. Be sure to wear loose clothing and keep your limbs away from cooling fans while inspecting the oil. These fans may come on automatically, even after the engine has been shut off.
Inspecting and Adding Oil
Step One
Open up the vehicle’s bonnet then locate its oil dipstick. It should be close to the engine with a handle that is brightly colored.
Step Two
Extract the dipstick, then wipe down its metallic section using your rag, and then completely insert and then extract it.
Step Three
The oil level is highest if your dipstick is fully oil coated. If its oil level rests between “MAX” and “MIN” this means you don’t have to add more oil and can then replace its dipstick and then seal the bonnet.
Step Four
If the oil level rests at or under “MIN” this means more oil is needed.
Step Five
Locate the oiled fill spot, which may display an icon. If you’re confused, refer to your manual which will help you locate and identify the filler cap. Once you find it, remove this fill cap then put your smaller funnel end within its fill hole.
Step Six
Add extra oil through pouring about a quarter worth of your container, and wait sixty seconds while the oil drains inside the pan. You’ll want to stop adding the oil once the dipstick displays the fluid levels at the “MAX” level. It’s also crucial to add the oil in smaller increments; otherwise too much oil can cause problems.
Step Seven
Extract the funnel then reattach your oiled fill cap and dipstick. Be sure that both are tightly secured then close up your bonnet.
Additional Tips
Auto experts advise changing your vehicle’s oil each five to ten thousand miles, depending on which brand you own along with your driving habits and its model year. The majority of modern Ford vehicles utilize an Oil Life Intelligent Monitor which will assist drivers in determining when oil changes are required.
Between changes, the automobile’s oil level might fluctuate and drop within a standard range. That being said, it you notice that it has dropped to a “MIN” level or lower, this means the vehicle should be taken to a dealership where a trained service technician can take a look to ascertain the cause.
