How To Install New Ford Headlights

Due to the popularity of Ford vehicles, there are many different headlights that can be installed. Below is a step by step guide which will help you install the headlamps yourself without having to schedule service. It works primarily for models manufactured after 1999, and the main parts you’ll need are a ratchet wrench, replacement headlights and 7mm socket.

Installation Guideline

  1. Pull upwards in the two retaining clips which hold the headlamp in place.
  2. After they’re up, then slide its headlamp outside its hold, and then unplug its headlight bulb.
  3. Extract its retaining screw which holds its side marker using your ratchet and 7mm socket.
  4. Now pull its siding marker forward from the hole, and then unplug its sided marker bulb.
  5. Extract its light assembly and bulb from its older side marker, since you will want to reuse them with the newer side markers.
  6. Install a bulb socket then plug its connector back.
  7. Install your newer sided marker housing within its hole, and then reinstall its retaining screw by using your ratchet and 7mm socket.
  8. Now plug the new headlight in, and then line up its housing with the associated tabs.
  9. Slide your new headlamp into position, and then reengage its headlamp retainers.
  10. Now repeat the nine steps above for the other side and you’re finished.

What are Predictive Headlights?

Ford has developed a new technology called predictive headlights which are designed to improve the safety of night time driving. While they share a number of similarities with conventional headlamps and can be installed in a similar manner, there are some notable differences. Predictive headlights are designed to rapidly inform drivers of where they should go as their vehicle approaches corners.

Anyone that has driven a vehicle at night, particularly on unfamiliar roads which are winding, knows how stressful it can be. Ford engineers have developed a number of tools and technologies designed to increase safety when operating a vehicle after dark. One example of this is lane markings and road signs as cues which will adjust the headlamp beams to properly illuminate the street ahead, particularly near junctions.

Predictive headlights are revolutionary because they make use of real time data to show drivers where to go. The system is designed to direct the beams onto upcoming corners before drivers detect them, which better enables them to quickly identify road hazards that could lead to accidents.

How They Work

Predictive headlights combine GPS data with precise street geometry to properly identify road turns in advance. It utilizes an algorithm which will calculate both vehicle speed and trajectory so the headlight direction can be adjusted proactively, which offers optimal illumination coverage for junctions, bends and other road features that lie ahead. Should the vehicle enter a road or street where the location data isn’t available, this system will adapt by working alongside the steering and camera to dynamically light the road until the driver enters an area where location data is accessible.
