How To Replace Ford Wiper Blades

Wiper blades are designed to clear dust, snow, leaves, and rain from your windshield so that you’ll have a clear road view.  But because they are directly exposed to the elements, the wipers will sustain heavy wear that requires them to be replaced every year, and below is a step by step guide for replacing your Ford wiper blades.

Equipment You’ll Need

  • Get two replacement wiper blades with the same length. Refer to your vehicle’s manual to learn which ones are best.
  • A pair of pliers (needle nosed)
  • Park the vehicle with its parking brake set.

Step One

Turn on the vehicle and then activate the windshield wipers.

Step Two

Deactivate the ignition once the blades become vertical with their windshield so both are accessible.

Step Three

You’ll work mainly with its wiper arms that are usually comprised of metal, along with a wiper blades insert and its rubber piece which fits inside the grooves of the wiper arm.

Step Four

Gently pull its wiper arm away from its windshield. After pulling far enough, the arms should lock within a service position, which means they don’t have to be continually held and you can release them.

Step Five

If the wipers don’t immediately lock within their service position, it may be necessary to manually extract their locking tab which can be found near the wiper arm’s base, where it attaches to a pivot.

Step Six

Beginning with its driver side arm, twist the blade to the angle from its wiper arm.

Step Seven

Next, you’ll want to squeeze its blade’s locking tab near the arm’s bottom so the wiper blade is released. If the blade stubbornly resists, this is when you want to use your pliers. Afterwards, slide out the blade so it is completely removed from its arm.

Step Eight

Now connect the replacement wiper blade with its wiper arm. This can be accomplished by sliding the new blade into its wiper arm slot. Press on it until it locks and pull the tab through its arm’s bottom. When done correctly you should hear a clicking sound.

Step Nine

Now you want to repeat steps five through seven for the wiper blade on the passenger side.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know it’s time to replace my windshield wipers?

If you notice that despite the blades being clean, they still don’t move quick enough to remove residue from the windshield, this is a sign that they should be replaced. Other indications include wipers that are wobbly when they move or which make a screeching sound.

Do I have to buy OEM wiper blades from Ford?

Windshield wipers are the easiest and most cost effective car part to replace, so it isn’t necessary to buy Ford OEM models although they are recommended because OEM parts have guaranteed compatibility.

How often should I replace my windshield wipers?

It depends partly on where you live and how often you use the vehicle. If you drive your vehicle infrequently and keep it housed in a garage much of the time, you can go years without having to replace them. But those who live in wet or humid climates that drive their vehicles on a daily basis should replace their wipers every six months.
