How To Replace Tail Lights For Your Ford Car

Tail lights are like the unsung heroes of your vehicle’s safety features. Sure, everyone talks about airbags and anti-lock braking systems, but let’s not forget how important visibility is. Tail lights notify the drivers behind you of your intentions to stop or turn, especially crucial during night-time or poor weather conditions. So, when one of them fails, it's not just an aesthetic issue—it's a safety concern that needs immediate attention. Luckily, replacing them isn't a Herculean task. You can easily do it yourself with some basic tools and a bit of know-how.

Accessing the Tail Light

Open your trunk or tailgate and locate the back of the tail light assembly. You may need to remove carpeting or other trim pieces to get to it.

Let’s Get to Work: The Removal Process

  • Removing the Fasteners

Locate the screws or bolts holding the assembly in place. These are usually found around the perimeter of the unit and can be removed using a screwdriver or a socket wrench.

  • Disconnecting the Wiring

Gently pull out the tail light assembly, being cautious not to yank out the wires connected to it. You'll usually find a wiring harness connected via a clip or a couple of screws. Disconnect this by pressing the release tab or unscrewing the screws.

  • Taking Out the Old Bulb

If your assembly is in good condition and you just need to replace the bulb, twist the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out. Then, remove the bulb from the socket.

Installing the New Light

  • Slotting in the New Bulb or Assembly

If you’re just changing the bulb, insert the new one into the socket, ensuring it fits snugly. If you’re replacing the entire assembly, attach it to the wiring harness.

  • Securing the Assembly

Slide the new or re-bulbed tail light assembly into the housing. Make sure it sits flush with the vehicle's body. Screw the bolts or screws back in to secure it in place.

  • Final Check

Once everything is assembled, turn your car’s ignition to “ON” or start the engine, then check if the tail light is working properly. If it does, replace any trim or carpeting you removed earlier.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the new light isn’t working:
  • Double-check the bulb placement.
  • Ensure the wiring harness is correctly connected.
  • Inspect for any blown fuses related to the tail lights.

It’s Always Better to Consult with a Ford Professional

Tail light replacement is generally a straightforward process, but if you encounter issues like rusted screws or complex wiring, it might be best to consult an expert. Tail lights are crucial for safety, so if in doubt, get professional assistance.

Replacing your car’s tail lights doesn’t have to be a complicated or costly ordeal. With the right tools and steps, you can easily ensure your vehicle remains visible and safe on the road. Regularly check the functioning of your tail lights as part of your routine car maintenance to avoid last-minute surprises. Safe driving!
