2022 Ford Escape vs. 2022 Kia Sportage

The Ford Escape and the Kia Sportage are two of the best compact SUVs on the market. They're also two of our favorite vehicles on test. For this reason, we decided to compare them head-to-head in a comprehensive showdown to see which one comes out on top.

Design & Style

  • Exterior Design

The 2022 Ford Escape and the 2022 Kia Sportage are both relatively small vehicles, but you should be aware of some significant differences in their exterior design.

The most apparent difference between the two is the styling of their headlights. The Escape has a set of curved LED headlights angled slightly upward, and its taillights also curve upwards at each end. On the other hand, the Sportage has square-shaped LED headlight housings with horizontal lighting elements that extend far down into its bumper below its taillights. The tail lights on these SUVs aren't quite as distinctive as their headlights since they're fairly standard rectangular units without any curves or angles to them whatsoever—but they still look good nonetheless!

  • Interior Design

The interior of the 2022 Ford Escape is a little more upscale than that of the 2022 Kia Sportage. The dash and door panels are trimmed in soft-touch materials, while the steering wheel has stitched accents that add a nice touch to an otherwise boring piece. The infotainment system is operated through an 8-inch touchscreen display mounted high on the center stack. There are also dual USB ports for charging your devices, as well as 1 aux jack and a 12V power outlet in case you forgot to charge your phone before getting into the car.

The 2022 Kia Sportage has no less than 6 cup holders throughout its cabin, but it only has one 12V power outlet—which can't be used for charging anything other than small electronic devices like cell phones or tablets. The infotainment interface displays on a 7-inch touchscreen display mounted high on the dash like most vehicles these days; however, since it's not integrated with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity, you'll need to connect via Bluetooth to use any navigation apps on this screen (and don't even think about using voice commands).

Technology & Safety

The 2021-2022 Ford Escape is equipped with SYNC 3, which allows you to connect your smartphone and use voice commands. The wireless phone charging pad is a nice touch, as well. However, the navigation system doesn't offer live traffic updates or advanced mapping features like lane guidance or turn-by-turn directions.

The 2022 Kia Sportage has an 8" touchscreen display that comes standard on all trim levels except the base model EX. It offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, plus SiriusXM satellite radio compatibility and an auxiliary port for external devices such as MP3 players or CD players (an optional 6CD changer).

Performance

The 2022 Ford Escape comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 164 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Opting for the turbocharged EcoBoost engine will give you 247 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The base model gets a six-speed automatic transmission, while the other two have an eight-speed automated transmission system.

However, if you have your eyes set on the least expensive option among these two cars – the Kia Sportage – it has a 1.6L four-cylinder engine that produces 161 ponies and 195 Nm of torque at 4,250 rpm. The turbocharged version delivers 192 hp (199 PS) @ 6,000 rpm and 225 Nm (158 lb-ft) @ 1,450–4200 rpm from its 2-litre T-GDI engine via an 8 speed automatic gearbox.

The Bottom Line

The Ford Escape wins in the horsepower, torque, and towing categories. It also has a more spacious interior and a larger trunk than the Kia Sportage. Overall it's a better value, with lower prices and a higher predicted resale value than its competitor. The only thing that could put some buyers off is the Escape's loud interior road noise at highway speeds.

Overall, though, we'd pick the Ford Escape over its closest competition any day of the week—and if you're looking for an affordable SUV that can do everything from hauling groceries to hauling your canoe or kayak (or even just carrying your mountain bike), this one is worth checking out!
